Overview

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose

HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) is a non-ionic cellulose ether used in cement and gypsum-based mortars as a water-retention agent and thickener. It stops the mix from drying out before the cement can hydrate, which is what gives tile adhesive its open time, wall putty its smooth trowel feel, and plaster its sag resistance.

In dry-mix mortar it supports water retention, open time, adjustability, thickening, anti-sag, lubricity and workability.
